The Support Another Artist Project

Fri Aug 21, 2009, 11:46 PM
I had originally started this project on my main art account, but then I thought it may be more beneficial to create an actual group for it. That way there are no missed articles or confusion.

:bulletred: The point of the project is to help underappreciated artists gain more exposure. There is a lot of unnoticed talent out there. And not only will those artists be rewarded, but you will be too! Read on for more details. :bulletred:

These are the steps of the project (repeated once a week, if you wish to continue with the project):
:bulletorange: Choose ONE deviant to support. It can be a random artist or a good friend. Note me telling me who you will be supporting
:bulletyellow: Display their artwork around the site several times during the week. This may be done through journal or news features (if you don't have a membership, you can still do a news article - the thumbs WILL show up), the Thumbshare forum or chat, etc.
:bulletgreen: Send me the links that will show where you posted the art (if you posted in many places, 3 or 4 links will be sufficient)
:bulletblue: At the end of the week, if you followed all these steps (ESPECIALLY #3), you will be featured! A news article will be put together to show off some work of the artists that took part.
:new: When you send the note containing the links, please include four of your own deviations. Those will be the ones featured. I used to choose them myself, but since there are some people who take part every week, it's hard to remember which ones have already been chosen.

You may also do something else to help out the artist, such as buying them a premium membership, putting their username in your signature, or suggesting a Daily Deviation. Every little thing will help.

Please keep in mind, noting me is crucial! If you don't, I won't know that you're taking part.

And remember, have fun!

Much love,
=Emerald-Depths

This is a really good idea and all, buuut...

Most of the people here doing this are going to be 'underapreciated' artists themselves, because your 'reward' is a feature. If they are a well known artist, they won't be looking for a feature. The majority of 'underapreciated' artists do not have a premium membership, so how do you expect them to fork out the cash for someone elses? Okay, so you might say that that was only a suggestion - but really, don't you think this is all a bit extreme to seem like you're working for a good cause?

I notice you seem to be the one who considers yourself 'underapreciated'. You seem to be doing the exact things you describe in your 'ways to get noticed' news article - holding contests, doing 'watcher' features and community projects... is it all to get the attention on to you, I wonder?

Plus, artists are big boys and girls. They can take care of themselves. If they really wanted to get noticed, heck, they'd do it themselves. It's kind of offending to offer 'charity' like this, it's like suggesting that we aren't good enough and need Mommy to show everyone what a clever boy we are. Well...

Some people will appreciate this I'm sure, but why should we work our asses off to give other people attention? Even though you stress that this isn't about the dreaded PAGEVIEWS you still are pandering to the whole attention whore in everyone. dA is not about 'getting noticed' or becoming ';popular' - unless you want to be a professional artist or seriously sell your stuff then it shouldn't be important how exposed you are. This is meant to be for FUN, to share art with other people and talk and meet friends - not seek people's faves or comments and daily deviations. If you have the talent, and upload regularly, then your art WILL get noticed some time or other. And if not, then you won't. Simple as that. It takes time, and patience, but you can't simply BUY recognition. You have to earn it yourself. Not beg for it from some other artist.

I appreciate you are trying to do something nice, I really do, but it all just seems a bit... silly, to me. And I couldn't just sit here and not express myself.

Self sacrifice gets you 50, 000 dharma points.

I have artwork in galleries that look like a bank job, in & out... for thousands upon thousands.

Whilst dictators & monarchs scream, starving artists leave the scene.

Tell me what is professional ? or what is commercial ? Alot of people on deviant art are spammers and thus they do get the acclaim.

Long live freedom of expression, give me two dollars fifty for this worthless mundane.

tl;dr

I have some issues here with your opinions.

No, I'm not trying to draw attention to myself, hence the separate account. That's the last thing I want to do. I don't see myself as underappreciated, and I don't know where you got the notion that I think I am. I've just seen too much great art on here that no one else has noticed yet.

I've been on this site for over 3 years, and everyone on here enjoys being featured, so that doesn't mean that only underappreciated artists will take part in this project. And I'm not seeking to give Daily Deviations. If I see something worthy, why not suggest it? I'm not looking to hand them out like candy. That's laughable.

There've been people who ask about ways to get noticed. So what do I do? I hold features and write news articles to answer their questions (as for my newest one, those steps will truly be effective if the artist is good enough, so I'm not trying to appeal to "attention whores"). I'm not the only one to do articles like that, far from it. The reason I feature my watchers is to THANK them for their support. Anything wrong with that? I don't think I deserve as many watchers as I have.

So I have no idea where you got those notions. Sure, some people may see this as unwanted charity; they can just request to be left out of it and that's that. But everyone's appreciated it so far, and it's been almost two months since this has been going on.

All the same, thank you for your input.
